Public presentation of the system to prevent traffic collisions with wildlife

On July 3rd 2014 in Castel Giorgio (TR), we held a public event to present the prevention system for traffic collisions with wildlife that was installed in SS 74 Maremma.

The presentation was organized as part of the networking and awareness building activities of the project, and was intended to provide an opportunity to exchange experiences with another Life project being carried out on the Corsican – Sardinian deer(Cervus elaphus corsicanus) called "Conservation of Red Deer Cervus elaphus corsicanus in Sardinia and Corse" - (One deer two islands) LIFE11 NAT/IT/000210.

The colleagues involved in the Corsican – Sardinian deer project are currently implementing specific actions to reduce deer mortality caused by traffic collisions, and expressed interest in the activities of the LIFE STRADE.

The Association “Save the bear” was also invited to the event, as it is developing a pilot project to secure the roads that cross the core areas of the Marsican Brown Bear.

In total, there were 25 participants in the event, including the representatives of the two LIFE projects and the Association “Save the Bear”, as well as Dr. Cocchi who represented ISPRA.

The event began with a greeting by the Mayor of Castel Giorgio and continued with a presentation of the activities carried out by LIFE STRADE, with particular emphasis on the testing of the system to prevent traffic collisions with wildlife and the results so far obtained.

This was followed by two more presentations, one on the LIFE project on the Corsican – Sardinian deer and another on the activities carried out by the association “Save the Bear”.

Finally, the participants visited the site where the prevention system has been installed, and were given a practical demonstration of the functionality and the components of the system.
